Love Canal - The Poisoned Ground That Changed Everything

It’s possible that THEA’s efforts to protect Houston-Galveston area neighborhoods from toxic waste sites wouldn’t exist if toxic waste hadn’t been discovered in a subdivision near Niagara Falls more than 40 years ago. A woman named Lois Gibbs fought for the cleanup and emerged as the leader of a movement to protect Americans from chemical contamination and that effort turned into the Superfund Law.

Lois became a mentor to Jackie Medcalf in the early days of THEA.  Now, there is a new documentary about Love Canal, a group of housewives led by Lois, and how that tragedy changed the way we think about toxic waste sites.

This week, Jackie talked to Houston Matters radio show host Micheal Haggerty about the ways the movement that started at Love Canal paved the way for our efforts here in Houston.
