Do not eat fish caught in the Houston Ship Channel.

Even under normal conditions, health officials warn children and women of childbearing age to avoid eating any kind of fish or crab from the area, which includes Brays Bayou, the San Jacinto River and north of the Fred Hartman Bridge.

However, this new warning, which comes directly from the Texas Department of Health, is applicable to everyone.

The channel has been closed since last Friday after the Deer Park fire

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard have been been skimming the water to pull out oily products.

A Texas Department of State and Health Services spokesperson said the organization does not expect areas downstream, such as the oyster farms in Galveston Bay to be impacted.

And while Houston Ship Channel seafood should not be on your menu, you might be surprised what other Houston-area waterways are safe enough to catch and eat fish.
