Houston Chron: Clean up of San Jacinto Waste Pits moving forward
The Environmental Protection Agency has reached a long-awaited agreement for cleaning up the San Jacinto Waste Pits, a move praised by activists who have pressed for years for removal of contamination at the Superfund site east of Houston.
The agreement Monday between the EPA and two companies responsible for the clean-up sidesteps a potential court fight over initial opposition to the plan.
The development lays the ground work for removal of about 212,000 cubic yards of material containing cancer-causing dioxin, a tiny fraction of which is believed to have spilled out along the San Jacinto River during Hurricane Harvey.
