Cleanup proceeds at the San Jacinto River Superfund Site

The San Jacinto River Coalition came together for an update on the cleanup at the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site last week.

The two most important items are:

Southern Pit: The cleanup is proceeding. However, there was an incident in which 100-200 gallons of contact water were released. This has spurred the EPA to review response plans for the project.  More details can be found here.

Northern Pit: The responsible parties have proposed containing the waste and leaving it in the pit. THEA and the EPA strongly believe that will not protect the community and are demanding complete removal of the chemicals. At this point, the EPA has rejected the proposal to leave the toxins in the pit and is ordering a review of the design plans by an independent third party.

You can review the video of the community meeting here.
