The Superfund Balancing Act: THEA Featured On Podcast

Fighting for the cleanup of Superfund Sites can be a balancing act.

  • Communication with community members is critical, but remediation details are technical and can be hard for the average person to understand.

  • The EPA is responsible for engaging the public, but people whose health is at risk are understandably angry and skeptical .

  • The companies responsible for the toxic waste can often tie up the process in delays and cost-cutting measures, forcing communities to spend years pushing for solutions.

THEA Founder and CEO Jackie Medcalf talked about community engagement and why it is so critical to a successful clean up on a new podcast, the Bracewell Environmental Law Monitor. The podcast also featured Steven Cook, a Bracewell attorney who was the deputy assistant administrator at the Office of Land and Emergency Management at the EPA when the agency approved the full remediation of the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site.
