Work Proceeding During Hurricane Season At San Jacinto River Superfund Site

So far so good on the 2023 hurricane season. There was one brief storm threat early in the summer, but nothing on the horizon for the moment.

At the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site, the EPA was faced with the choice of stopping the cleanup of the Southern Pit during the hurricane season or continuing work with protection measures in place.  The agency decided to keep working and keep the project on schedule.  Here are the measures they are taking:

  •  Minimize the areas that are open for excavation and the amount of stockpiled waste material at any one time, and

  • Put secondary containment around the soil management and water treatment areas.

What is involved in the cleanup of the Southern Pit? Watch our short video to see how the work will progress.
